When We Free The Film
When We Free is a short fiction film about a recently freed black community's first camp meeting after emancipation. This revival takes place on a camp site and draws people from near and far all searching for one thing or another. In particular, they search for balance between the spiritual traditions they have brought across the Atlantic and those learned in the New World while in bondage.
When We Free is also an example of our by every means media approach to liberation and love using, in particular, the tools of art and technology. It is the umbrella we use to sustain the creation of multimedia & art that connects us to legacy.
By Every Means Media Approach
When We Free began as an approach to media and art making, first; birthed because we understand that we can create the world anew. Free! That possibility begins with our own ability to imagine something new. Through film, music and other mediums we collaboratively remember where we come from and limitlessly chart and choose where we will go.
Why is When We Free
When We Free is an international community collaboration initiated by Julia Roxanne Wallace, (aka Sangodare Akinwale), with Dr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs as the primary doula.
